(Akademische/r Rat/Rätin, 100% full-time working hours; German civil service paygrade A 13)

for an initial period of three years in a fixed-term employment relationship as a research assistant or, if the necessary requirements are met, as a civil servant.

The focus of the Chair is on social inequalities and their dimensions, social cohesion, health, environment and the (causal) modelling of inequality processes over the life course and their influenceability by policy. These topics are researched applying an interdisciplinary and, where appropriate, internationally comparative approach using methods and concepts from sociology (empirical social research), demography, and health sciences (public health). The Chair is embedded in the Institute for Sociology, which, with a total of 16 professorships, is one of the leading facilities for sociology in Germany and cooperates closely with other research institutions, e.g. the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (https://www.uni-bamberg.de/en/sociology). We are looking for a highly motivated Research Associate who wants to actively participate in the successful development of teaching and research at our Chair.

Job Description

  • Research and teaching activities in the field of social inequalities, wealth, social cohesion, health, environment, or a combination thereof. Teaching schedule: 5 semester hours per week (SWS); participation in research projects, publications in international journals and (assistance with) the acquisition of new third-party funding projects.
  • Supporting further Chair tasks relating to teaching, examinations, and self-administration.
  • Furthering your own academic qualifications, with the goal of a successful academic career.

Requirement Profile

  • Very good university degree (Master’s degree or comparable and preferably doctorate) in sociology, demography, public health, or related subjects.
  • For civil servant status, a successfully completed doctorate or second state examination in the above subjects.
  • Research interest and knowledge in social inequalities, wealth, social cohesion, health, environment or a combination thereof and excellent skills in data management and statistical methods of longitudinal and causal analysis, as well as in the writing and publishing of scientific texts.
  • Very good IT and English skills (C1) are required. Applicants with no knowledge of German should be prepared to quickly acquire the necessary language skills.
  • Ability to work in a team and in a structured manner.

We offer (among other things)

  • Opportunity to use world-class datasets, an extensive interdisciplinary network, and support in achieving your own academic and professional goals.
  • Flexible working conditions and a pleasant working atmosphere in the team.

General Information

The University of Bamberg is committed to increasing the proportion of women in research and teaching,
and therefore strongly encourages suitably qualified women to apply. Severely disabled applicants will be
given preferential consideration if their qualifications are otherwise essentially equal.

The University of Bamberg has been certified by the Hertie Foundation as a family-friendly university. It is
particularly committed to the compatibility of family and working life.

The position can generally be part-time for academic staff (not for assistant professor, non-tenure), provided
